TheShrinktaboftheVMwareToolscontrolpanelprovidesoptionsforreclaiming
unusedspaceinavirtualdisk.Ifyourvirtualmachinecannotbeshrunk,thistab
displaysinformationexplainingwhyyoucannotshrinkyourvirtualdisks.
Shrinkingadiskisatwo‐stepprocess:apreparationstepandtheshrinkstep.Inthefirst
step,VMw
ar
eToolsreclaimsallunusedportionsofdiskpartitions(suchasdeleted
files)andpreparesthemforshrinking.Thissteptakesplaceintheguestoperating
system.
Theshrinkprocessisthesecondstep,andittakesplaceoutsidethevirtualmachine.
TheVMwareapplicationreducesthesi
zeofthedis
kbasedonthediskspacereclaimed
duringthepreparationstep.Ifthediskhasemptyspace,thisprocessreducesthe
amountofspacethevirtualdiskoccupiesonthehostdrive.See“CompactaVirtual

OnLinux,Solaris, andFreeBSDguests,runVMwareT
oolsastherootusertoshrink
virtualdisks.Ifyoushrinkthevirtualdiskasanonrootuser,youcannotprepareto
shrinkthepartsofthevirtualdiskthatrequireroot‐levelpermissions.

configurationwithVMwareTools.TheVMwareToolscommand‐lineprogramiscalled
vmwtool.
